The «Shymqala» historical and cultural complex is a unique open-air museum showcasing the rich historical heritage of Shymkent.
The complex has been recreated as a reconstruction of the ancient city of Shymkent. Historic fortifications, narrow streets, and traditional urban architecture have been authentically restored, allowing visitors to experience the atmosphere of a medieval city.
During the middle ages, Shymkent was one of the key trade and cultural centers along the Great Silk Road. The city fortress served as reliable protection for caravans and as an important economic center for merchants and craftsmen.
The complex consists of three main sections:
— Citadel — the city’s defensive and strategic zone;
— Shahristan — the administrative and spiritual center;
— Rabat — the commercial and artisan district.
Visitors can stroll through the streets of the ancient city, visit craft workshops, and learn about the characteristics of medieval life.
Today, the «Shymqala» complex is one of the most important tourist and cultural attractions in Shymkent.
